Questions & Answers

Straight answers to what small businesses actually ask.

Frequently Asked

No jargon. No runaround.

Most questions small business owners bring us come down to the same handful of worries — what it costs, how long it takes, who owns what, and why a brand-new site isn't the top result on Google the day it launches. Here are the honest answers.

Cost & Value

How much does a website cost?

The honest answer: it depends on what you need. A focused site for a small business is a very different project from a full e-commerce store with hundreds of products. Rather than quote a number that means nothing, we start with a conversation, learn what your business actually requires, and give you a clear, itemized price with no surprises. You can see the full range of services we offer, or just tell us about your project and we'll give you a real number.

Why does a custom website cost more than a template or a website builder?

Because you get something built for your business specifically — not a template with your logo dropped in. A custom site is designed around how your customers actually behave, loads faster, ranks better, and grows with you instead of boxing you in. It's the difference between a tailored suit and one off the rack. See examples of our work to get a feel for the difference, or read more about our web design and development approach.

Isn't it cheaper to just build it myself on Wix or Squarespace?

Up front, yes. But DIY builders trade a low monthly fee for your time, and they hit a ceiling fast — on speed, on SEO, on anything custom your business needs down the road. Many of our clients come to us after outgrowing a builder and paying twice. If you're genuinely not sure whether you need us yet, that's exactly what our free consultation is for — we'll tell you honestly, even if the answer is "not yet."

Process & Timeline

What does the process actually look like?

It comes down to three things: we listen, we design, and we build — and we stay with you through all of it. We don't hand you off to someone who wasn't part of the original conversation. You can read the whole philosophy on our about page, but the short version is that we start with a conversation, not a questionnaire.

How long does it take to build a website?

Most small-business sites take a few weeks to a couple of months, depending on scope, how much content is ready, and how quickly we can get feedback from you. Bigger builds — e-commerce, custom functionality — take longer. We'll give you a realistic timeline up front, and the biggest variable is usually how fast content and approvals come back to us.

Do I need to have all my content and photos ready first?

No — but the more you have ready, the faster things move. We can help with copywriting, and we offer graphic design if you need a logo, brand assets, or images. If content is a bottleneck, we'll tell you early so it doesn't stall the whole project.

Launch & Visibility

My site is finished — why isn't it showing up on Google yet?

This is the single most common misconception, so you're not alone. Launching a website and ranking on Google are two completely different things. When a new site goes live, search engines have to discover it, crawl it, and decide where it belongs — that takes time, often weeks to months, and it doesn't happen automatically just because the site exists. Getting found is an ongoing effort, which is exactly what SEO is for. It's a marathon, not a switch you flip at launch.

Can you guarantee I'll rank #1 on Google?

No — and you should be wary of anyone who does. Google's algorithm uses hundreds of signals and changes constantly; nobody can guarantee a specific ranking. What we can do is real, honest SEO that steadily improves your visibility over time. If someone promised you a guaranteed #1 spot, our consulting page explains why that's a red flag.

What happens after my site launches? Am I on my own?

Not unless you want to be. Websites need care — updates, security, backups, small changes as your business evolves. That ongoing upkeep is what we call webmastering, and it's there for clients who'd rather focus on running their business than maintaining a site. If you'd prefer to handle it yourself, we'll make sure you're set up to do exactly that.

Ownership & Working Together

Do I actually own my website when it's done?

Yes. It's your site, your domain, and your content — full stop. We build things to be handed off cleanly, so you're never held hostage by an agency that "owns" your site and holds it over you. Independence is the point; that's part of what we believe, and you can read more about it on our about page.

Will I be able to update the website myself?

In most cases, yes — we can build your site so you can edit text, swap images, and add content without touching code. And if you'd rather not deal with it at all, our webmastering service handles updates for you. Either way, you're in control of the choice.

Do you only work with businesses in Grand Rapids?

No. We're based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and we love meeting local clients face to face — but we work with businesses across the country. You get the capability of a large agency with the personal touch of a dedicated partner, wherever you are. More on that on our about page.

I already have a website. Can you just fix or improve it?

Often, yes. Sometimes a site needs a rebuild and sometimes it just needs the right fixes — and we'll tell you honestly which one it is instead of selling you a redesign you don't need. The best place to start is a free consultation: we'll give you a straight read on where things stand.
